Tesla Starts Regular Production of Electric Sports Car

Tesla Motors Inc. started regular production of the Tesla Roadster, an electric sports car.

The San Carlos company rolled out a prototype of the car last summer. It originally planned to deliver cars to about 900 customers waiting on a list by late last year, but pushed that back to March.

The sports car accelerates from zero to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds. Tesla plans to sell a sports sedan holding five people starting in 2010.

Ze'ev Drori is president and CEO of Tesla. The company raised $40 million in bridge financing last month. PayPal founder Elon Musk, the company's chairman, got the first production Tesla Roadster on Feb. 1. He also gave some of the money in the $40 million round.
